The Light Outside Meera’s Window
Meera lived in a small village between hills. During winter, the village felt very cold and very quiet. White frost covered the windows in the mornings, and people stayed inside their homes, wrapped in warm blankets.
Meera liked to sit near her window. She watched birds hop on the ground and saw trees standing tall even in the cold. In the evening, when the sun went down, the snow sometimes turned a soft pink color.
Still, Meera felt something was missing. As she looked outside, she thought to herself, “Winter should not feel so lonely.”
A Small Surprise
One evening, Meera noticed a tiny light outside. It was shining near a big old tree. It was not a star in the sky, but a small oil lamp glowing softly in the cold.
Meera put on her shawl and stepped outside. The lamp was warm and bright, and it made the cold air feel gentle. Meera smiled, because the little light filled her heart with happiness.
Meera’s Idea
The next day, Meera had an idea. Before it got dark, she placed a lamp on her window. She lit it carefully and stepped back to watch.
Soon, she noticed another light. Across the street, Uncle Joshi had lit a lamp too. Then another lamp appeared near the well, and another one near the path. Little by little, lights began shining all around the village.
Something Changed
People began to come out of their houses. They talked and laughed together, sharing stories and smiles. Someone offered tea, while another shared roasted peanuts. A warm scarf was even given to a small boy whose own had grown too short.
The air was still cold, but the village felt warm with friendship and kindness.
Meera Understands
Meera looked out of her window once more. So many lights were glowing all around the village. She felt happy and peaceful as she watched them.
In that moment, she understood something important. Cold is not just about the weather. Cold comes when people stay far from each other. But kindness, she realized, can bring warmth to everyone.
A New Tradition
Every winter after that, the village would light lamps. No one planned it, everyone simply remembered to do it.
And every evening, Meera would look out of her window and see the glowing lights all around. She smiled, because she knew something special: the warmest light comes from caring for others, and all it takes is one small lamp to begin.
